Apples & Bananas Party Supply
How it all began
Welcome to Apples and Bananas Party Supplies, my name is Angie and I am the proud owner of this little hidden gem. We are a licensed home based business located in Surrey, British Columbia.
I have been celebrating my oldest child’s birthday now for 23 years. My second child’s for 20. I remember the days of going store to store, dragging my bundles of joy around in the rain to be generally disappointed by the selection, never mind everything I forgot to get because I was too focused on the kids not getting into everything. In the 90’s I had no idea of what was out there or what was going to be out in the market when my husband and I had Bananas 6 years ago.
I had so much fun doing Bananas first Birthday, I just couldn’t wait for her to be 2!! Then along came Apples!!! I was still disappointed to find all these great themes on the market but nothing available close to home. I had some extra time on my hands and I got my feet wet planning parties!!! I always felt somewhere deep inside there was something I was longing for, a missing achievement in life and I dove in … really deep!!!
I decided I was going to start my own business, so with my husband’s jaw on the floor, I announced I was going to call my new business Apples and Bananas. He thought I was crazy and thought this would pass like everything else I have started.
My business started as an online store and I was happy working an hour or two a night, but something was still missing. I missed the personal side of retailing. I missed seeing the smiles and thought about the look on my customers face when they received their order. Were they happy? Were the kids happy? Were they disappointed? Did I ruin their party? I would only know if they emailed me and told me.
So I put an ad out on Craigslist offering delivery. I have never had so many people ask me if I was for real. Parents loved it!! So I was happy again and I have met so many wonderful people and I have been watching their kids grow up every year, sometimes I see them 2 or 3 times a year depending on how many siblings they have.
Then I started to give out my cell phone number so they could always reach me and realized my cell phone only held so many messages. By the time I was off work from my full time job my mailbox was usually full, so the texting started. Who knew texting was best when we all have kids who like to scream when they see us on the phone.
Apples and Bananas started to grow and became very busy and was taking up so much of my time I was exhausted. Then one of the moms I knew Sara offered to help me out in Richmond. This was the beginning of not only a new friendship but a new future for my business. Then my friend Tara, also a previous customer, and now our representative in Burnaby pushed me to take things a few steps further and build a team. So we did!!!
Early in 2014, I left my full-time job to turn this part-time hobby into a full-time business. I had dabbled for long enough, and as I got busier, it was hard to balance the job, the business, kids and family. I really loved what I was doing with Apples & Bananas, not so much with the job, so it was an easy decision.
I realized my poor little do it yourself website could no longer handle the demand being placed on it and after a serious crash it was time to “let it go”. I hired a new web designer to bring my online presence (the main focus of our business since we don
